How to tell if dentist qualified to do root canal and crown?

Hi
I have a deep filling in one of my first molars- and it has started to give me trouble. My dentist told me that it looked like I'd need a root canal and a crown in the near future and that day is here I think. I was quoted approx €2,000 for it all which is hefty seeing as we now only get 20% back on it in tax. Anyway, I still want to get it done in Dublin where I'm based.

My current dentist is very good and is conservative with my dental treatments so I don't doubt their integrity but as my main concern is to keep my tooth I would like to know how I can tell if they are suitable for the job? He has a BSc in Dentristry but I'm not sure what else.
I previously lost a 2nd molar during a root canal treatment as the tooth split up the middle and had to be removed which I really want to avoid happening again.

Can anyone tell me where i should be looking for for this treatment?

Many thanks

Lara

To start of I would ask your dentist if there are any special circumstances that drive up his quote and ask him to breakdown the price for root canal treatment and for the crown.

Looks like he is quoting you an endodontist (specialist) price alright. I would call a few other dentists and see what they would charge. Even better would be to find a dentist anywhere outside Ireland, and you could save hundreds....
