how to stop automatic re-direct (websites)

Depends on how each site does the redirect - e.g. HTML META tags, client side JavaScript or server side code execution. I think that the first two (definitely the second) can be prevented through browser configuration but I don't think that the last one can easily be prevented if at all. I suspect that sites that do such redirects do server side redirection having done some sort of geographic IP address lookup to select the relevant region specific site. Why not contact the sites in question asking them why they insist on doing this rather than allowing the user some latitude in the decision? It's not always reasonable to infer geographic location information from an IP address or to assume that the user wants information for that region (e.g. US travellers to Ireland might still want Google.com rather than Google.ie etc.).
