How to sell car (safely) to private buyer?

Hello All

I hear of meet-ups in car-parks - my own Lidl carpark seems to have a few gentlemen examining cars every week for private sales/hand-overs.

But how to do this safely effectively? How to pass over, how to receive a few grand for a car?

Thoughts, ideas & suggestions welcome ...
