Whats involved in replacing a gas-fire with a wood-burning stove ?

I'm clueless about this but I just want to find out roughly how big the job is before I get quotes from installers.

Its a matter of capping the gas pipe and maybe running a flue liner down the inside of your chimney, easy-peasy!

I have no idea but is there any issue with gas in the pipe, even when its capped. Should it not be cut off where the pipe starts and then vented.

no, because the gas pipe is usually capped outside the fire place, to the side normally. gas in a pipe would have to reach extremly high temperture before it would combust. If the gas pipe comes up inside the hearth then it would still not be in direct heat as the stove would be on legs and more than likely sitting infront of the fire place. Let a pro do it to elimate chance of gas leak.
