how to record from tv to a usb stick

I want to record TV programmes onto a USB stick (rather than disc). I'll probably need a TV USB input socket but do I need a smart TV? What's the easiest way to record from tv to a usb stick?

Not all TVs with a USB port can record to a USB device. There's no way to answer the question without checking the manual for your model. Various set-top boxes allow recording to USB, e.g. Ferguson Ariva, priced around €100.
