How to open a .pub file?

I have a .pub file that I need to open. However I googled this and read there is no way to open this without MS Publisher. I can't believe there is no other option? Any pointers appreciated.

Sign up for trial adobe account and use the Adobe online .pdf creator.
The includes .pub

Or download and install the 60-day trial version of Publisher from www.microsoft.com. After the trial expires it should still allow you to view .pub files.
