How to find out who is the beneficiary of a Bank Account & State Saving Cert of deceased person

My stepmother (married to my father) passed and had some Bank Accounts and State Savings Certificates in her sole name.

How can my elderly father find out who is the named Beneficiary on each Account and Certificate?

The Executors are my step-sister and my father.

Does a Financial Institution not require a sole-named account to specify a beneficiary? If not, are all account balances then handled in accordance with the Will?

I don't recall having to specify one for any of the many bank accounts that I've opened over the years.
