how to find info that solicitor had on file

We're in the process of calculating potential capital gains tax if we sell a property. We're missing a piece of information that our solicitor at the time would have on file. However the solicitor has since passed away - do you know how i would find out who his files were passed onto? He worked for himself from home and i don't think he had a partner. Any suggestions on how to begin tracking down the information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The law society would be your first port of call - they'll be able to tell you who, of anyone, has taken over his files.

However, if you purchased a long time ago (eg more than 12 years), the file may well be destroyed.
