How to defrost a fridge?

I have a fridge freezer that I've been a little remiss in defrosting, to the extent where I now have to 'post' items into the top drawer (which has broken, and I can just about get my hand in). Anyway the traditional method in my parents house was to stick bowls of hot water in it. But I can't pull out the top drawer. I also can't unplug it as it's fitted. Previously what I did was open the door, stick down a pile of towels and hope for the best. But I don't have time to do that. I then came up with the solution of turning off the fuse. But it's connected to the alarm as well and cut the power hence the alarm was beeping like mad. Anyone any ideas?

A hairdryer blown in melts the ice a treat .(obviously don't let the dryer/flex touch water)

Push in the small red defrost button on the temperature dial and leave it for 24hrs?

Old friends are best... be very very careful before using a hair dryer. You may end up having to get a new fridge no matter how careful you are.

As your fridge is badly frosted you could use a hairdryer round the door that you cant open but just enough to get it open, and then do what your parents do, far safer and less painful than replacing the fridge.

Find the time. A fridge is our best friend you need to look after it :)

This happens to me too when there is a power-cut. If you key in your alarm code then the beeping stops. This should allow you to cut the power to your fridge in order to do a complete defrost by what ever method suits you best. I find that filling the 2nd drawer down with hot water speeds up the defrost of the top one. Make sure that the rubber seal isn't damaged as that could cause the freezer to be struggling to keep the temp cold and exacerbating your problem.

No red button. No plug nearby. Anyway flipped off the fuse - and left for the day! BAck home to nice clean fridge.....What happened to make it so frosty was a friend who was house sitting didn't close the door properly and it was like Antartica.
