How to change standby / shutdown times ?

Hi,
A friend has a laptop but it loses the picture to a blank page very quickly if the mouse is not moved - probably after a minute or less. Is there an easy way to lengthen this time ? Sorry if I am not using the correct computer phrases.

right-click on the desktop (that's the main window when you logon)
Then go to the ''screensaver'' tab and add minutes on to the timer.
the default is 10 minutes for me, maybe 1 or 2 for you.

If rabbit is talking about automatic hibernation, standby or shutdown timeouts rather than the screensaver timeout then s/he (sorry - not sure which) probably wants to look at Start -> Control Panel -> Power Options.

Using a screensaver will save your screen from screen burn (if an image sits on the screen too long it can become burnt into it and leave a ghost like image). The best option is to have your screen power off if idle for a long(ish) time. This will save both on your electricty bill (slightly) and in turn reduce in general power consumption (which we should all aim to do - similiar to the red eye campaign aimed to reduce leaving TVs etc on stand by).

It does take a little longer to re power up the screen, but it's easy enough to change the settings to times which will suit the user.

Yes but i know how rabbit feels. It can get annoying if it keeps on cutting off after 2 mins.

Not generally a problem these days with the display technologies that are in general use.
Modern CRTs are much less susceptible to burn-in than older models due to improvements in phosphor coatings, and because modern computer images are generally lower contrast than the stark green- or white-on-black text and graphics of earlier machines. LCD computer monitors, including the display panels used in laptop computers, are not susceptible to burn-in because the image is not directly produced by phosphors (although they can suffer from a less extreme and usually non-permanent form of image persistence). For these reasons, screensavers today are primarily decorative or for entertainment, and usually feature moving images or patterns and sometimes sound effects.

Fully agree CM, though I have seen it occur on an old laptop and the results can be very painful. These days seems to be more of a privacy or entertainment issue.

The real point was while the Screen Saver seetings can be changed, the best result is to change the Power Off setting.

As for cutting off every two minutes, follow the route provided by CM and you can set your timings to whatever suits your usage pattern (if you have frequent ten minute lapses in usage set the timer to 15 minutes, if you only ever have 5 minute breaks unless it'll be a long break then set it to 10 or 8 minutes etc.). Each person has different usage patterns so go with whatever matches our needs.
