How to buy corporate and government bonds

A lot of investment literature mentions having a certain % of your portfolio in bonds, both government and corporate. I have also heard that bonds may be a good bet at the moment as interest rates are set to fall over the next year thereby giving the potential for capital appreciation as well as the coupon.

I was wondering how to purchase bonds and what would be a typical minimum investment. And any other advice regarding the logic of purchasing bonds.

Note that corporate defaults will rise in a recession, in particular where high-yield bonds are concerned.
