How to apply for work from abroad?

My husband and I are looking to move home to dublin from abroad. We have begun looking for (I.T.) jobs and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to the best way to go about it. We have looked in some Sunday newspapers but the recruitment section didn't seem to be as large as it used to be before we left (although maybe we were just unlucky with the weekend we looked). We've also begun to look on Jobserve (website). Should we perhaps with a specific recruitment agencies or how can we best get a feel for the current employment situation in Ireland?

When I was trying to return to Dublin (from UK) I found I rarely made it to the formal interview stage (panels for semi-state posts) and that though there appeared to be abundant vacancies in my field applications and c.v.'s seemed to disappear into a 'black hole'. Friends and family in Dublin advised it was important to 'be on the spot' and certainly there is an informal, as well as an advertised, job-networking system in operation.

In the end I decided not to move back at the time for a number of reasons the most important being that I did get appointed to a post I was enthusiastic about and was then contacted by the project co-ordinator suggesting I 'job-share' with another candidate. Whilst I appreciated the creativity of this 'two-for-the-price-of-one' approach my confidence in the planning and judgement of the administration was shaken. Also, it was a 'time-limited contract' (18 months) with assurances it 'probably' would continue beyond that. Though salary was in theory negotiable they agreed to match my current UK salary. However I was very aware that since Ireland - especially Dublin - has a higher cost of living than UK I was actually dropping income level.

Just some things to chew on........
 
I moved back from the UK last year and found it quite easy - maybe I was just lucky...

I registered with an irish recruitment agency while still in the UK and followed up with a weekly phonecall just to make sure I was not forgotten about - about 4 weeks into this I was called over to dublin for an interview with three comapnies and ended up getting a position with a telecoms comapny.

I suppose the best thing to do is tell the recruitmwent company you are based in the UK and want to return home, then let them do the work. Papers are not really the way to go these days as there is a more up to date list on irishjobs.ie, monster.ie and recruitireland.ie.

Send your CV's using the above web resources and you will find they will be agancies who are advertising. This will have a twofold effect so that you will also be on their books. I'm not a fan of agencies but they do tend to eventually get results. For the record a friend of mine was going to return home 3 months ago and sent CV's as explained. His advice was that it will take about three months to get sorted but he did get a few offers (in IT). He did 2 telephone interviews but did say that the money offered was not as high as expected.
 
recruitment websites would def be the way to go, you can apply on-line to both agencies and companies and they generally do offer a good selection of the type of roles which are around and what agencies specialise in your particular area! - recruitireland.com,irishjobs.ie and monster.ie are just a few......
