How safe are Spanish Banks.?

Does anyone have information about how safe the Spanish banks are - specifically La Caixa. I would also like know if there is a guarantee scheme in Spain.? I already have a small amount of funds with them and was thinking about moving some more money from BOI to La Caixa to diversify a little. But I don't want to jump from the frying pan into the fire.

No I am not Spanish but I already have an account from a previous transaction some years ago and was thinking of using this to hold some funds. Looking at other posts on AAM it seems quite complex to set up an account outside Ireland, so I was thinking of using this existing account. But I am cautious that Spain may end up in the same situation as we are here.
