I intend to paint a room in my home myself, it's my first time to do this. How do I figure out how much paint I need?
Any tips appreciated, I don't want to make a mess of it.

Welcome to AAM stressed
You would need to give some more details....are you just painting the walls or are you doing the woodwork also.
Are the walls painted at the moment and is the colour light or dark. If the colour on the walls at the moment is dark and you want to use a light shade this time you may have to prepare them first. By this I mean giving them a coat or two of less expensive white emulsion as a base.

to add to Anns good advice, you should measure the wall area that you intend painting and look at emulsion paint in a paint shop. The back of the tin will tell you how much area 1 litre of paint will cover.

You will need 2 coats, but as Ann says, if you are covering a dark colour with a light colour, a undercoat is a good idea.

Thanks very much. I'M actually painting a darkish yellow room and changing it to a cream colour so I suppose I'll need a few extra coats. I only hope I have the energy.

You could consider using a generic white paint for the undercoat. Usually a bit cheaper than the coloured variety.
