Very advisable to put a sealer coat on first. Any good DIY/Paint shop will advise.
As has been posted here also you could also use diluted emulsion or what I have been told before and its something I have done in my own house is to coat all the walls with wallpaper paste first.
The longer you leave it the better chance you have of avoiding napping of the paintwork
