Hello,

The house was re-wired 3yrs ago and was also wired for an alarm. Basically wires over each window, a wire ready for the pad in the hall, and a cluster of wires beside the fuseboard.
How long should it take (2 guys) to come in, put on and connect all contacts, program pad, and have the whole thing tested and working?

Thanks

HI,
would you not consider a wireless alarm? I am in the process of renovating a house and it has been wired for an alarm when I started shopping around for alarms it was cheaper to put in a wireless, so the wiring the electrician did was a waste of time! the benefit of the wireless is that there are no cables on the windows themselves for the contact points. I paid €800 (excl VAT ) for a 4 bed semi. it would have been €900 for the wired alarm. I can give you contact details of the company I used if you pm me.

Thanks for the reply. However I'm really only asking as there's two guys in the house and it seems like it's taking them ages. The other half said she had the same thing done a few years ago in her house and the company used at that time had the whole lot done in 3 hours.
The two lads in the house at the moment are looking at manuals etc and almost appear clueless. They were recommened by friends....they're currently looking for a ladder to put the bell box up on the front of the house!

You would have been wise to spend the extra €100. You will spend a lot more than that on batteries over the years.

Please read the posting guidelines re recommendations and do not send any via PM.

for the OP, I'd be very worried about any alarm installer who does not have access to a ladder. Are they PSA registered? Note that you are breaking the law if they are not, your home insurance may also be voided if you are claiming a discount for having an alarm.

I had a change in alarm in a property a number of months ago. Although the property was wired, it took the Installers a few hours to change the system. If the heads are having to read through the manuals, you are simply wasting your money. As Leo stated your Insurance might not be effected or valid. You might consider telling the installers you have to take a hike.

A search of google gives ;

Hard Wired Systems: The Better Choice When Possible
If your home or business is still in the construction or remodeling phase, it’s a good idea to choose the less expensive—and more maintenance free—hard wired alarm system. The design for the components will need to be included in the initial blueprints and installed by a professional. However, once in place, you will rarely need to replace them. If something should go wrong with a hard wired component, it will be easier to replace parts. The wireless systems are updated continuously with add-ons and new features; consequently, if a wireless system stops working, it can mean installing a whole new system as compatible parts for your original system may be unavailable.
