How does selection for HSE clerical officer work?

After doing the test I have been placed on an order of merit, I've been told the interviews will be in the new year... Does anyone know how this system works? (I was placed on average 35 in the order of merit for my selected county)...thanx

Hi Wickla,

As far as i know its based on the score you achieved on the day of the test. In other words the person at the top of the table gets called for interview then the second and so on. You could be waiting until December 2007 or you could be called in January 2007. Best of luck anyway.

Sad to say but your local TD may be able to help. The amount of political influence in health board/hse positions is huge. In our area being a member of FF is a great help!

I did the clerical officer tests as well. I am wondering, how do they choose the people for the job.

I got within the top 10 for my chosen county. However, I am not great at interviews. Does the interview account for a certain percentage of the marks? Eg if someone further down the panel than me did a better interview, would they get a job first?

Also would the HSE only call people for interview according as the vacancies arose? If there was one vacancy, would the first 10 people be called to interview and one chosen for the job?

The Corporations work different, in that your exam results, experience and interview skills are amalgamated into one score. Then the person with the highest score gets placed first on the panel, and would be the first to get a job.

I am a bit puzzled by the HSE system. If anyone could shed some light on this, I would be grateful.

Once i sat the exams, I was placed within the top 30 on the general Clerical Panel for my county.
I then went to interview and was subsequently placed 4th for my county based on a combination of my interview and my results in the clerical exams.

This is helpful, as I know the interview will be very important in deciding the final panel.

Just as a matter of interest, how long did it take between being placed on the panel and getting a job? Also how long did the panel last before it expired?

As far as I remember, I got my ranking and then a call for a position within a fortnight of one another - bearing in mind I was in the top 5 placed.
BTW, I never took up the position so I can't help you after that!

Thanks for this, by the way, why didn't you take up the job? I can understand the money is low for the first few years, and the clerical officer job starts at 22K.

I would be interested in the job because it goes up to about 34K long term. This is very good for office work with a 33 hour working week. At the moment I am doing accounts, which I enjoy, but I have to organise hols and time off so they don't clash with month end. The working week is 39 hours, but it is very hard to get all the work done in this time, and this makes the job stressful. I am on about 28K but I am unlikely to get more money, unless I move to a senior position and take on more responsibility with even more hours, work and stress.

I was offered something that offered me far more prospects for the future. Also the entry level on the salary was a big factor.
