How do you join wooden floors to tiles?

We put down semi solid wooden floors and need to put "beading" down in the area where the floor joins the tiles in the kitchen and also around the fireplace. All the strips I have seen in B&Q, Woodies etc... are for joining wooden floors to carpets. Anyone know what to do for tiles & fireplaces?

There is a simple cover strip available, it's available in a gold or silver finish and this simply straddles both finishes and is screw fixed into the timber flooring. I would run a bead of clear silicone on the lips before fixing it down to the timber to prevent water, dirt and grime from finding its way under the strip. There are many variations on this cover strip available but remember that the DIY warehouse only stock a basic range of the most popular products. If can't find what you need you'd be better off going to a specialist shop that specialises in tiling or timber floors.

~Sorry to jump on this thread.

Carpenter, my tiles and wooden floor are not the same height - will this strip work on this too?

thanks

Yes, the strip I've used would accommodate a 10mm difference in height, but there are many other variants available. I buy these strips at a builder's merchant where they have up to 20 or 30 different profiles- pretty much every situation or detail is catered for.

Thanks for the reply carpenter, is there a name for it or will I be able to spot the required strip in a shop? I will most likely go back to the shop I bought the wood in which specialises in wooden floors and tiles and the like.

I don't know of any name for it, it's a pretty simple cover strip, like a flattened "C" in section or shaped like a saddle board.

Hope someone might be able to reccomend, I want to put down tile in my kitchen and hardwood in my living/dining room which is all open plan. Which should I have put down first, the tile or the hardwood?

Thanks!

I'd say tile first and let the grout/adhesive dry out completely before laying the timber floor, otherwise your floors will act as a sponge and soak all the water out of the tiled area. You'll risk your timber floors buckling then!

We have just finished tiling our kitchen which meets our timber floor. We bought a t bar I think its called, in oak to match the timber. The problem is that there is a slight height difference between the timber and tiles which causes a gap on the tile side when the t-bar is down. Its only a few mm's but would cause dirt to gather. What should we put in this gap? We were thinking of some kind of foam or something?

Try clear silicone, done well, you won't even notice it there.
