How do you register a web address of your own name e.g. www.marymurphy.ie or .com? If you have to pay someone is it a once-off fee or an annual thing? Does it matter if you don't use it for a few years? Thanks.

you will need to register the business name with CRO first if it's a .ie domain and then go to a domain registration company and they will do it for you, you should get a list from www.iedr.ie for .ie domains.

(1) .IE domains cost about €40-50 per annum. You have to show you are entitled to use it - often via a registered business name.

The detailed requirements are here :

http://www.domainregistry.ie/

You actually buy them from a registered reseller - I use Blacknight.

(2) .com domains are easier and cheaper. Typically €5-10 per annum.

They operate on a first-come, first-served basis. I use Godaddy.com for mine.

In both cases there is no particular requriement to use the domain for anything.

When you buy a domain, depending on the registrar, you may get an email facility and some basic hosting space. However, without paying more, you generally get very little actually included with the domain.

I've purchased from namecheap.com in the past which is well .. cheap
