How do you clean your alloy wheels ?

All sorts of pricey don’t work options in Halfords, Mick’s Garage etc.

Particularly front wheels get black baked on brake dust I believe.

Any simple economical way of dealing with this issue ?

Hot, soapy water & plenty of elbow grease.

Ah now Paddy, you either don’t have alloys or you have dirty alloys.

Hot water & elbow grease alone will not deal with this issue.

How bad are yours?

Noticeably bad on the front, a stiff brush with many different cleaners makes little impact, particularly in corners, steam / pressure washers not any better.

A sharp metal implement will remove it, but I’m sure this is not the way to go.

What about trying Swarfega or some type of hand cleanser that removes oil?

Use a soft sponge to work it in.

The internet suggests oven cleaner (and protective clothing/gloves).

Unless the veneer is peeling back and the bare metal has begun to corrode, warm, soapy car-shampoo in solution with water will remove brake-dust (black) / disc-rust (reddish-brown) from alloys. Use one of those little nylon brushes to remove the stubborn bits and use an old sponge as well (never use this sponge on car-body afterwards) Power-hose wheels before hand-wash and power-hose afterwards.

Do not use acid-based cleaners, corrosive scrubs (pot-cleaners), CillitBang or other similar household solvents.

Once cleaned, polish & shine wheels carefully with car-polish. Be careful of pads and discs.
