How do revenue know i own a house and am not in rented accomodation

Probably a very silly question

So revenue are going to be looking afer collecting the property tax

How will revenue know who owns a house and is liable to pay the property tax against who is renting
 
Its levied against property owners, so the property register I assume. Who is renting doesnt matter
 
This is puzzling me too. If the idea behind the household charge was to get people to register themselves because it wasn't possible to work out who would be chargeable, surely the only people who are going to be chased for the property tax are those (like myself) foolish enough to have "done the right thing".
It does seem as though those who are totally offside will get away with it.
 
I always wondered, and still do, why the Govt don't use the existing register of preperty owners, the Land Registry?

They know that I own my house, so why do the Govt expect every house owner to help build up a new database?

It's self assessed, so I presume it will work the same way as any self-employed person at the moment files a tax return.

They will carry out random audits and will come down hard on anyone found to own a house but not have declared it.

It would be very simple for them to pick randon PPS numbers and write to them asking if they own a house, and if not to provide some sort of proof that they don't.

This is a register of registered land. Not all land/property in Ireland is registered - some of it, especially in urban areas is what is called "Unregistered title". So, the owner won't be readily identifiable.

I realise it's off-topic, but what you seem to be saying is that the PRAI register the ownership of land, not of buildings?

OK, but still, couldn't the PRAI registers be used in some way to build up a House Ownership register??
 
That was just a broad response.

But usually it is the title to the land that is registered. And then someone builds a house on the land. Land Registry don't record that. And the you might have a block of apartments on land - each of those would (usually) be registered as a Leasehold interest on a Freehold Folio.

I don't know if there is any reason why the Gubbermint could not use the Register of Lands as a basis. I would have thought it a laborious, but easy enough task, to go through every road/street/estate and, with the electoral register, and some knowledge of the locale work out ownership details.

How will they know then you own a house or will they know

Would you get away without paying property tax ?

Do you have electricity supplied to your house?
Do you pay a TV licence at your address?
Do you receive correspondence from Revenue to your address?
Do you tax a car at your address?

If you want to wait, it might take them a while but eventually they'll catch up with you.

AFAIK when you come to sell, or your house is being conveyed after your death, the conveyance won't be able to go through without confirmation of the LPT having been paid.

Scotty1 was asking if they would get away without paying the LPT if they didn't have a mortgage and hadn't recently paid stamp duty etc., and I was pointing out that there is a variety of other information sources which the state could use to identify the property / owner.
