How do I watch Region 1 dvds?

I'd like to order the original Mission Impossible tv shows (1966) as a dvd set. (Clips on Youtube are not enough!) Trouble is, the only supplier is Barnes and Noble in the US. They are region 1 dvds. Am I correct in thinking that they won't work here? Is there a way to view them?

Thanks,

What is the make and model of your DVD player? Some are region free but I believe they can all be reset to become region free with a few clicks of the remote in a particular sequence...

You cant make all dvd players region free - I had a very nice Sanyo one that you couldnt do it with - but if you search the web with the make and model of yours you will find that out.
Alternatively you can probably watch them on your pc - or ultimately you can buy a region free dvd player for 50 euro or less, I got one in Powercity at xmas time thats region free for 50, they may even be less than that by now.

Generally the cheaper the dvd player the more likely it will play all regions.

I could be wrong but I believe that the reason for this is that the dearer dvd players are made by the big companies like sony and they have a vested interest in protecting the different markets in the different regions to boost their coffers, so they actually spend money on putting in the technology to keep their dvd players to one region where as the cheap ones spend as little as possible and are therefore region free. Again I could be very wrong.

As mentioned above those players which are region locked out of the box often have simple hacks to make them region free. Google the make and model and "region free hack" or something like that.

Sounds about right to me. My cheapo region free one is not as easy to use as my old locked one and has no digital display on the unit itself - so although I prefer being able to watch region free dvd's - I did find my old one easier to use.

Thanks for taking an interest.
It's a Philips Digital Video Player DVP520...

Thanks to all for such helpful info. Will try Googling and come back to the experts here if I get stuck...

- Press "System Menu" key to enter Set Up menu.
- Move to "Preference Page" using arrow keys to the left or to the right.
- Press the following sequence in the remote control: 135566
- A menu indicating "Region Code" will appear.
- Change region using arrow keys to top or down. Region Code = 0 will play all regions.
- Press "System Menu" key to exit Set Up menu.

dvdhacks.co.uk for unlocking all dvd players to make them multi region

To the original poster: after trying the hack outlined above I would also suggest buying as cheap as possible region 1 DVD to test (or borrow one from someone you know) before shelling out for an expensive boxset.
