How do I export folders from Outlook Express?

Caveat

I have created extra folders and saved a number of sent/received messages that I need to keep. I wanted to do this before I 'compacted' - which is what OE has been asking me to do.

However, I can't work out how to save these folders elsewhere on my PC.

I've googled this but keep ending up being pointed to various tools.

Surely this can be done without specialist software?

It seems like it should be straightforward to me - I don't care what format they are saved in as long as they are safe and can be viewed some way.

Any ideas anyone?

Yes.. you need to go into 'Tools', 'Options', 'Maintenence'

Then hit 'Store Folder'.. this gives you folder name and path.. i.e 'C:\Windows\folder\etc'.. select the path and 'copy' (Control + C)

Open Windows Explorer.. go to the address bar, paste in your path.. then the folder opens..

You'll see loads of DBX files or something similar. Copy all of these and if you ever re-install just paste them into the new 'Store Folder'.. then when you restart Outlook Express the messages and folders are magically restored!

You may be able to download software which would 'decode' or show the contents of the DBX files.

I have about 800MB or 1GB of emails which I copy in the way I've said above.

Cheers

Good man Joe - just trying this now.

(You can observe the coming of age of a tekkie virgin in real time if you wait ;))

Edit:

Wait, hang on - does this option not just 'empty' fairly randomly? What about archiving/exporting the specific folders I have created - or maybe I have misunderstood.

Thanks mathepac - I actually did download this but again, it does not seem to allow you to export specific folders - more or less an all or nothing type thing.

In Outlook 2003 SP3, I simply go to File, then Archive and select the folder I want to Archive. I usually choose to save as a .pst file.
