Hi,
I was wondering if someone could give me some advice!
So my husband bought a house before we meet. He lived in it for 2 years then I moved in. We lived in it for 2 years together with my son and then we had a child together! We decided to raise our family in rural Ireland so have rented out the house an we subsequently are renting in the Subarbs. We are married. Kids are not teenagers so we are moving back into my husbands house. Due to the unforeseen circumstances my husband had to remortgage the house few years back so there is a big mortgage on the property. I will have to pay half the mortgage when we move! Is there any way I can get my name on the mortgage etc. or any advice on this situation! Heaven forbid if anything happens my husband would I be let with nothing or if we separated down the line! Where would this leave me.

You could engage with your solicitor to have this arranged. At the same time if you haven’t done so already organise your wills,

They are married
This info is in the first post - although it would be easy to miss it

As the others have said being married is protection but to answer your qn to get your name on the mortgage you'll have to engage with the bank

In order to get the mortgage you must have signed a Family Home protection document. Which for your case would have stated it was not the Family Home as you lived elsewhere. Right now you are not liable for the mortgage. How much is owing and how much is the property worth. There is no way I'd pay a mortgage on a property I didn't own. To have the house put in your name you need to go to a solicitor. Does your husband want your name on the mortgage.

Separately to this, a married person has rights. And anyone paying towards a mortgage, particularly in a marriage situation, is acquiring property rights.

In the event of a separation/divorce. All assets will be taken into account.

Do you think you are heading for divorce and is that the reason for your post?

Is the mortgage on the house currently a business loan as it was not a ppr when the loan was taken out? Changing to a personal home loan may make the mortgage cheaper overall.

So two things

Go to solicitor with your husband to organise the transfer of ownership in the home to joint names.

Go with your husband to the bank to remortgage to a home loan in joint names. How much of a mortgage will you need? You are possibly early to mid 40’s so will only get a 20 year mortgage, will you and your husband be able to afford the repayments on a shorter mortgage?
