Some years ago i switched from ESB to Bord Gais for electricity and last year i switched back to the ESB. I never checked whether i was still getting the benefits until today when i realised i was not getting them. I gather i will have to reapply and was wondering will the social welfare people allow a refund of the benefits since i switched back. I can only assume i got a cash benefit while with bord gais as i do not have the relative bank statements to check.

Firstly I think you need to get those Bank Statements before you can assume that money was paid.

Did you inform the "Free Services" section of the Department of Social Protection when you moved from ESB to Bord Gais and again when you returned to ESB.

You need to re-apply and inform them in writing of the changes in supplier.

They have no way of knowing of your moves from one supplier to another if you do not tell them (preferably in writing)

I actually moved f rom ESB to Bord Gas in May 2009 and came back to ESB in June 2011. Rang relevant section Social Welfare and a pleasant lady told me that i did not get any benefit since May 2009 and she was arranging to send me a cheque to cover all the arrears. I will never be critical of the social welfare people in future!. Perhaps anyone who has switched should check that they are getting the benefit as i was rather remiss in this regard.
