I am in the process of trying to organise House insurance for my new house, the Insurance company need to know the "cost of rebuilding the house" ... I know this is not the cost of what I have paid for the house, so who would tell me what it cost to actually rebuild ??? Is this something standard ???

Have a look at the table in here for some guidance [broken link removed]

is this calculater accurate, can i use it to give information to insurance company

Annal,

I used the calculator for my house insurance last week, no problems.

The SCS guide shows figures for July 2004, so is probably a bit out of date by now.

You could cross-check the calculator using the figures in the SCS guide and your own measurements. I did this and the figures were slightly lower than the calculator, so I used the calculators figures.

Most, if not all, Irish rebuilding cost calculators online are based on the SCS figures. At the moment these have not yet been updated for 2005. However the SCS figures are useful for getting a rough estimate of the rebuilding costs but you should pay attention to the caveats/footnotes and make sure that you don't underinsure (of overinsure if possible but overinsurance, within reason, is better than underinsurance). If you are not confident that the ready reckoner figures are reliable enough then you will probably need to get a professional valuation survey done.
