I have had my home Insurance with Aviva for many many years. Also two cars.

Yet again, I renewed both cars insurance with Aviva and yet again when I get my home Insurance renewal I am not given any benefit for the fact that I have two cars insured with them......despite me advising them of this. Every year it is the same. (I renew cars as new customer).

I just noticed that my no claims discount is 40% on my home insurance. Is that the maximum that I can get?

This years premium €430. Last years premium €330. (House cover €700k, Contents cover €55k.)

No claims? Up to 40% off
The only way to get the best value for money with insurance is to always shop around at renewal time, don't automatically be loyal to your existing povider, get home and motor insurance from different providers if necessary, haggle if necessary and make sure that the cover is precisely what you need and no more or less.

Yes 40% is the maximum NCD
It's a pain in the backside that to get the best premiums we have to renew as new customers but that's the way they want it
Like you we've two cars as well but am fully expecting the policy's not to be linked so a higher renewal quote for the house is expected
But either a quick call or on online quote should get you back close enough to last years premium
Unlike others I don't shop around at renewal as Aviva have nearly always given me the best quotes for my requirements

One thing though and maybe it's just me but your contents look on the low side, if your house burnt down to the ground tomorrow would that be enough to replace everything and if not would that effect the settlement offer in such a situation??

I have a 30 year old kitchen. My bathrooms are basic. I have a nice staircase. Are these contents items or building items?

My furniture is O.K. I have some expensive artwork. Most of my contents will probably end up in a skip or donated to charity when we pass, so not really interested in owning a Home of the Year. Five bedrooms but only two slept in so no real need for extra beds anymore.

My contents are insured for €55k, would that not buy a lot of stuff?

I would be interested to read what others insure their contents for?

Do we really need to be insuring contents for chairs in rooms that we hardly ever sit on, carpets that are no longer walked on, curtains that stay open most of the time, fireplaces that are so old fashioned now that I even wonder why I bought them.

"Buildings insurance covers the structure of your home as well as any fixtures and fittings including fitted kitchens and bathroom suites. Contents insurance covers the items within your home, from furniture and electrical items to jewellery and clothing."

I've the house 3 bed at €390k and contents at €90K, the max you can have without an alarm declaration
I've expensive entertainment systems in the house and a very large digital media library which there wouldn't be much change out of €20k
After that it's all the normal stuff like couches, dining table and chairs, rugs, beds and all types of furniture large and small etc etc
but I think personal clothing, cycling gear, bed linen, towels, shoes and all the stuff in a kitchen, yada yada yada all start to add up as well

All the contents of a house that you've paid for add up if you had to replace them all
but would agree with you that if I lost it all in a fire I'd only be replacing a fraction of it at this stage in my life
or just the stuff that I actually need and use, because as you say
Most of my contents will probably end up in a skip or donated to charity when we pass

To me €430 looks like a very good price. My home insurance is up soon, I haven't got the current insurer's renewal yet.
As a start, I just put my details into Aviva’s quote form. €480K rebuild in Dublin, €70k contents, not in flood area etc, no claims ever. Even as a new customer and with my lower rebuild cost, Aviva is quoting me €600.

More shopping to be done.

Contents are anything you can take with you if you sell, Buildings are the remainder. There can be arguments over carpets and curtains!

And don't forget all Aviva customers who have both home and car insurance with them car have their free holiday insurance.
Multi trip Europe.
