House alarm problems

House alarm goes off intermittently a few times a week, even when it is not set. We suspect wire damage due to the activites of little furry animals! I now want to deactivate the alarm and get the damage investigated later.

The alarm dates from mid-90's and was installed by the previous owner, the owner nor the installer are no longer contactable. It seems to me to be a custom job, none of the components are branded for a specfic company.

When the alarm box is powered off (fuse removed and back-up battery disconnected) the internal alarm speaker is deactivated but the outside alarm (visible from the street) is active - obviously powered from a seperate source. We have tried all the breakers in the house but none deactivate the external alarm.

My question is - where, typically, would the external alarm be powered from, assuming there was a standard code of practise for alarm installs at the time?
