Hi there,

Can anyone tell me of nice hotels in the centre of Rome & Venice.

We are doing a DIY honeymoon and are spending a few nights in each city. However I have heard some stories about the standard of hotels in Italy and by all accounts they would not be to the same standard as say Irish hotels.

So basically am looking to avoid them.

Thanks.

I stayed in a very nice one in Rome called City Hotel, near the Spanish Steps on via due Macelli. It's small but clean and staff are friendly, speak English and reasonable breakfasts are included.

i found a website recommended here called http://www.venere.com (www.venere.com) had maps and reviews, booked in Venice using this, best of luck Venice is amazing

Have a look at [broken link removed] We were recently in Rome and stayed at their hotel there which is two blocks from Vatican City. Continental breakfast only and no other meals in house, but I did post the name of an excellent trattoria within easy walking distance.

Have a great time!

http://www.venere.com (www.venere.com) is fabulous at finding tons of hotels, especially in Italy, that you might not normally ever find on your own.

A quick tip if you use this website: it's sometimes worth calling the hotel directly once you've found it and see if you can book a slightly better rate going directly. In a couple of instance, we got slightly cheaper rates by eventually booking directly through the hotel (or "free" breakfast etc.) rather than through the website, as the hotel has to pay venere a booking fee.

Have a look at www.aventinohotels.com

There are 3 hotels in the group and we stayed (5 of us) in San Pio last September. After checking out reviews on trip advisor I was sold - and I wasn't disappointed. Breakfast was in the garden with orange & lemon trees & it was about 20mins down Aventino hill to Collesium. You have the option of two buses to come back up if the hill is too much for you. It's a great daily walk after all the vino tino / pasta / pizza!

I would strongly recommend this hotel and as it's not in the city centre the rooms are a fine size unlike a lot of hotel rooms in Rome.

I can also recommend venere or tripadvisor.

I am just looking at hotels in venice too. Go to trip advisor and search by user rating... then scroll down to the first one that is in your price bracket and see if it's in a location you like. If so, book it, if not, keep scrolling!
