I am flying into Montpellier with the family (husband and 3 teenagers) mid-August and I am looking for a hotel for 3 nights. Near the sea would be nice but we would like a good base to explore the area from. Any recommendations would be welcome!

ryanair fly into montpellier so there should be hotels on their website.

you should find lots hotels there on the net. its a great place to visit. book directly with a hotel instead of a hotel finding website-less the commision.

Not necessarily — sites like http://www.venere.com/search/?lg=en&geoid=25892&ref= (Venere.com) include very useful user reviews, and often publish promotional codes offering 5% off. Last time I booked a hotel in France, the web rate was the same as the the direct quote, so I booked it online. Best bet is of course to fish the net first (mixed metaphor?), then contact the hotel directly and see what better rate they can offer...

recall the Sunday Times a few years ago saying the best hotel in Montpellier was the Holiday Inn.

Here are some nice hotels , with pools and between Montpellier and Beziers so great to explore this lovely area!
Chateau de Lignan , Le Prieuré Saint-Martial (really nice!) and a few others can be found If you are looking for a truly memorable meal try Jardin des Sens in Montpellier, 3*** Michelin restaurnant and now hotel

Good grief.

I've stayed in this place and it is very charming. Note that this article is four years old so prices will not be relevant.

I've also stayed in the Hotel du Palais which is a simple place about 100m from Le Guilhem. A plain, clean place with a resident cat and dog at reception.
