Hong Kong Hotel

I'm looking at going to Hong Kong in November and was wondering if anyone could recommend a good hotel. I am looking for a decent (not too basic) hotel in a good location - not sure whether to stay on the island or Kowloon - would really appreciate any suggestions.

Also, I am planning on going for 8-10 days - will this be too long? I don't want to run out of things to do after a few days!

I don't know that much about the place TBH, only that it looks great and I just want to go somewhere completely different, so if anyone has any tips or recommendations ...

I think thats too long in Hong Kong. what about a trip into China form there? Szenjen (?) is just accross the border by road or why not fly to Beijing and see the great wall and other sites?
I stayed in Causeway bay in HK and its a great place to stay.

Agreed - 8-10 days in HK is too much really ... HK is pretty tiny and it's mostly very new so there's not much of historical interest to see for example .. It's a great city to visit and the shopping is really good - the setting around the harbour is excellent and you'll certainly have fun there - but I would think that 3-4 nights probably would be enough.

The other thing is that hotels in HK are pretty expensive - I'm not sure what your definition of "decent" is ... but you can pay a lot for hotels in Hong Kong.

I'd recommend that you should look to spend at least 10 days in the region (less than that and by the time you factor in travel days and time to get over the jet lag you'll not really have a holiday). I'd split between HK and somewhere else - maybe mainland China as suggested or else anywhere else in the region as HK is very well connected to everywhere.

Hi

Agree with others here, your planning to spend too long in HK - it's a good place, but 3-4 days is enough me thinks

Consider visiting Kowloon (the former Portugese juristiction where most of the HK residents go to gamble etc), along with other districts in China. I think you may need some paperwork for China (excl HK), so contact the embassy in good time.

For a hotel in HK - how about this one ?

Intercontintential Hotel - Grand Stanford.

70 MODY RD, TSIMSHATSUI E. KOWLOON
HONG KONG, CHINA

Hotel Front Desk: 852-27215161

I've previously stayed there and can recommend it hightly. They sent car to pick us up at the airport (cost approx 40 quid and made life very easy for us, having just landed after a c10 hour flight from Holland), hotel was excellent, service, language etc etc. The location is just off the island, but very easy to get around so that was never an issue.

To be honest, we wanted a nice hotel and for what we got, we did not consider it particularly expensive. Check out various hotel internet sites for special offers etc - the likes of www.priorityclub.com or http://hhonors.hilton.com/[broken link removed]

If your heading for HK, make sure you go for a spin in the cable car up to see the Big Buddah, it's about a 20-30 min journey and some great views of the city etc (assuming your OK with heights obviously, otherwise there is a buss I think you can get there)

Lots of other things to do also - but as originally stated, it's a small city and 3-4 days is plenty I think

Enjoy !

I think you mean Macau here. Kowloon is just the mainland side of Hong Kong. Macau is certainly worth a day-trip (via fast catamarans).

Would also agree with the recommendations re 3-4 nights for HK itself.
If you really want to stay longer though, would recommend trips to some of the outlying, less developed, islands.

There are also many trips available to China - I did one to Guangzhou (Canton) and Guilin which I would recommend - it also included a day on the Pearl river.

Just back from Hong Kong. I did a 2nt stopover returning from Australia & NZ. I would recommend 3-4nts max unless you're a serious shopper. No duty charged at all anywhere - so ignore those shops with big signs that say Duty Free as they all are ! Bargains to be had but you have to be careful as there are a lot of rip-off merchants around.
It was very foggy -smoggy?- for the time I was there & am told it's a regular occurence. I was told not to bother going to the Big Buddha as you couldn't see it- they showed me a pic they'd taken to prove it !

The Victoria Peak is well worth doing & I'm sure the views are wonderful on a clear day.

Go out on the Star Ferry around 8 when the light show starts up.

I went on a tour to the Chinese mainland border. It's interesting to see the difference. HK seems affluent enough but the countryside looks a lot poorer. We were told there are about 300,000 squatters under the Lion Rock area.

Gambling, as in Casinos, is illegal in HK so I guess previous poster means Macau which they consider the Las Vegas of the area.

I think you'd definitely need to plan some excursions as previous posters suggested or even spend a few nts at a different location.

I felt I saw as much as I wanted after 3days/2nts.

I went out on this for boat for free through the HK tourist board.

The star ferry to the Peninsular Hotel in Kowloon is worth a trip as well. Fabulous.

Dinner at the peak travelling on the funiculare railway.

I found the back street meat stalls amazing in 2002 ... 19th century squalor beside 21st century skyscrapers... but I think bird-flu means it has all been sanitised now.

Whoops,

Dead right - very sorry,

... also, if your there for a few days, you might like to consider going horse racing in HK (Wednesday night is the big night out and it's mad, absolutely mad !)

Cheers

Stayed here last year. Found it reasonably well located and a fair price.

Booked it through one of the hotel discounting sites. Check the key posts for info on these. 3 days is ensough in hong Kong. You need to set up some daytrips to fill a longer stay.

Shenzen (mentioned in a earlier post) is the shopping place - even cheaper than Hong Kong though for electronic goods I would suggest sticking to highstreet retailers in hong Kong - as there is lots of counterfeit stuff around.

You will need a visa to enter mainland China - requires a trip to embassy in Dublin

Thanks for the advice, I kind of thought 8-10 days might be a bit long but it just seems such a long way to travel for a few days. I might look into crossing over into China for a few days - I would be interested in the trip to Guangzhou and I think Macau is definitely worth a visit.
