Im not at all au fait with affairs in Hong Kong except for generalised views - former British colony, major financial center, a mix of West and East for the good, etc,
So trying to catch up.

What has gone wrong?

Is Trumps tariff war against China anything to do with it?
Or is China trying to impose communism?

Listening to Denise Ho (pro-democracy activist) on CNN.

Hong Kong is a critical financial, trade and political centre of the world like London, New York, Tokyo, Paris, et al,
Between Brexit, Yellow Vests, and now Hong Kong...?

The New York Times has some excellent pieces on the background to the protests. There's a subscription charge but it's on special offer at the moment.
Basically since the Brit's left a growing proportion of the people of Hong Kong see themselves not as Chinese but as Hong Kongers. The increasingly authoritarian leadership in China (Xi Jinping is the most powerful Chinese leader since Mao) and the attempt to pass an extradition bill through the Hong Kong legislature which would allow very easy extradition to mainland China caused a popular uprising.
Unlike the Orange Revolution in Ukraine and some other places this isn't a CIA "encouraged" protest.

Of course the Brit's didn't help matters when, after thy had negotiated an agreement with China as to how they would hand over the colony they, for the first time in its history, introduced sweeping democratic reforms.
