Recently got offered a '99 Honda Civic 1.4 Litre Petrol Hatchback with circa 100,000 miles up on it for €2000

Just an opinion but would you not be better off getting a diesel car if you are going to be doing hign mileage. The '99 Civic would be a fine car but the 1.4 engine would not be very powerful for someone doing high mileage. A diesel car would almost certainly have more power and torque and be far easier at the fuel pumps. You would have to balance this though against higher road tax and potentially more frequent services on older diesels. Check out honestjohn.co.uk for reviews and potential problems that may arise.

Honda Civic - is it dolled up with alloys, skirts, spoliers etc ?
If so stay away from it because the guts will have been driven out of it by some boy racer.

Honda 1.4 is good engine by 1.4 standards plenty of poke compared to other 1.4s but as siad a diesel would be better buy for long miles.
Look at TDi as they have accleration as good as most cars, particularly if driven and the fuel economy is better.
Also you may be able to convert to ecodiesel down the road for better economy.

Notwithstanding the other comment 2000 sounds a decent enough price assuming it hasn't been thrashed... hondas always do well in reliability surveys, and if it's been properly serviced should be good for plenty more miles. Check the timing belt has been done.
