Home Phone

Hi,

I used have a Panasonic home phone and it was fine but was dropped and broke.

I replaced with a cheap cordless (not digital) phone from Binatone but it's not the best. Lots of interference.

I'm thinking of getting a new Panasonic phone again. I can see some in Argos and they seem to command a €50 premium over standard brands.

i.e I can get a Panasonic digital cordless phone (single) with answering machine for €90. I'm looking at the €150 moidel with free location and some other features which might actually be useful.

Does anybody have any opinion on the quality of the current range of Panasonic phones?

I hate paying for a "premium" brand to get quality and then find they are no good.

I've always found them good. A colleague has always found them crap. Go figure! I don't think that you need to pay a significant premium for a "good" phone as these are pretty much commodities these days. Try a specialist shop like Diagem in Capel Street, Dublin 1 for advice and recommendations. You can always buy elsewhere if you choose.

What do you mean by "free location"? A cordless?

I have one of [broken link removed] puppies and am very happy with it, never had a problem, caller display is handy, bought it from vikingdirect, cheaper than quoted here. Loads of handy features, eg switch off ringer after a certain time during the day (if baby is asleep), text messaging. Had a panasonic for a while, gave it to parents, but it was about 5 years old. Had no problems with it

free location is apparantly that you plug a sender unit into the phone line and the phone/base unit can be anwhere.
i.e. your base unit doesn't need to be near the phone line. This is quite useful for me.

Also useful is "audible caller ID". With young kids it's would be great to hear who is calling instead of leaving the babs to view the screen on the phone on the other side of the room, and said babs then doing something that babs shouldn't do.

It also has vibrate for when babs is asleep.

It also has call blocking with is apparantly super caller ID. I don't know exactly what the person ringing you hears... perhaps a polite message telling them to eff off?

I'm looking at this one:
www.panasonic.co.uk/dect-.../index.htm

My phone also has that audible caller ID, once you program a number in your directory with a voice activated action, when that person calls you it tells you who is calling, albeit when the ringing stops and it diverts to answering service

Don't really see the advantage of this unless you don't have an electrical socket nearby the phone socket or something like that. I have an old Panasonic KX-TCD-950 DECT and have always found it grand. Great overall battery life and charge/talk time. No real bells and whistles though.

it's more the case that I don't want the phone base unit to be located where the phone socket is... which is near the sink, or else in a different room.

At the moment I am running wires all over the place in behdin presses etc etc and I find that the halogen downlighters cause significant interference with the cordless phone. I have to switch them off (the ones in the presses) to take a call. The phone cable runs close to the halogen cables.

Anyway, I think I'll just get it. Hopefully it will be good quality sound with no interference, which is the main aim.

Is that safe! Perhaps the voltages on phone lines/equipment are low but one should always be careful of positioning electrical appliances near water!

Find out what frequency your halogens are generating and then see if you can get a phone on a different frequency.

no it's not safe. I have serious concerns about the electrician who was used for my house!.

Anyway, I bought the Panasonic yesterday and it's great. No interference from the halogens and the sound quality is great. I always thought my wife just mumbled on the phone.....

One thing tho... call barring does not mean you can deflect incoming calls, it means you can stop calls being made, whiel specifying numbers which are allowed, like family/emergency numbers. I have to wait for the teen years before I try that out.
