So Im just after getting my hubbys p60 and he earned 35706 last year. his tax rate band is 41,021.24. im not working so is the normal tax band for a married sole earner.
are we entitled to the home carers tax credit. i was workng last year but stopped in april. i was well below the income threshold but my hubby heard that when we wouldnt be entitled to it because we are on the higher tax band.
any other advise on taxing for single incomes welcome.
we are already getting the bins and rent tax relief.

If you are a stay at home parent minding the kids then it seems to me that you should be entitled to the Home Carer's Tax Credit for last year and this year. Being in the high rate tax band does not of itself disqualify you so I don't know where he heard that from!

If you qualify for it then the easiest way to claim it might be via the PAYE Anytime system.

If you get it for last year then you can request a P21 balancing statement so that you get any tax refund attributable to the backdated tax/credit claim.

There is no tax relief on service charges from 2012.

Check that you are claiming all other relevant tax credits.

You can backdate claims to 2007 if necessary. Have you claimed medical expenses relief for any/all of these years?

tut! lost connection there and logged me out. He was discussing it with fellow workers in the same situation earlier. they were all curious as to why he had a bigger tax band than them. I think they are on 32k cut of i think. some1 then said that he wouldnt be entitled to home carers because of it. doesnt make sense to me. its only €900. nice to get in 1 go but not much spread through the year. no i did claim it a couple of years back but got it taken of as it was affecting my tax while i was working. fin work last april, only working part time 8 hrs/wk so should still get it.

Yes i have claimed back med expenses. should be worth a good few hundred to me.

Are they single or married but not on joint assessment as the single person standard rate cut-off point is €32.8K and the married with one or two incomes figure is €41.8K.

This is incorrect.
 
yeah looks like they are taxed as single people. must pass it on.

Sally - How much did you earn up to April 2011? if greater the 6700 you would not be entittled to the tax credit
 
But have your hubby's coworkers actually done anything about sorting out their situations though?

At some point, someone must have applied to have the tax bands allocated the way they are between your husband and you.

In the other people's cases, they may have 32k and there wives may have 32k as well, and it will stay that way until they ask to change it.
 
yeah we applied to get our tax credits transferred after we got married and weve swapped and changed since because of me having different jobs. so my hubbys gonna let them know 2moro. they are all on the same money so with overtime and bonuses they are well over 32k.
