Hi Guys,

I am just completing my 2006 tax return & have a question....

My wife worked part time during the tax year - two mornings per week while my Son was at secondary school.

The gross amount that she earned as per her P60 was 5,661

My question is can we still claim the Home carer's tax credit for the year? Or if there is any income at all it's gone?

Any advice is much appreciated

Many thanks

Judging by this:

[broken link removed]

you may qualify for a reduced credit of €770 - ((€5,661 - €5,080) / 2) = €479.50

I applied for it in this years tax return (wifes earning of 3k)and they did not include it. I wrote to them about it almost two months ago and no reply yet.

ONce you had, at some point, completed the application form for it, then if it's not now on your tax cert, ring the lo-call number on your cert & they should put it on. Better to speak with someone now than wait on possible reply to a letter 2 months ago. If you get a new cert before end of year at least you get the benefit of a lump sum back rather than having to wait for a review of 2007.

I think you can also claim it via the PAYE online service (the PAYE version of ROS) if applicable.

The problem with claiming that way is that this will include it in the current years Tax Cert/P2C (or whatever is is now called) and I don't want to tot up the figures at the end of the year and find that she has gone over the limit and have to pay them back over €700. Plus getting the money back in one lump sub is better than getting an extra 15 week!

Sorry, you have me a bit confused, your first post said you wrote about it 2 months ago about including it. Your second post indicates that you dont want it until after the end of the year. Which is it ?

"This years tax returns" = When I was filling in Form 12 for 2006.

Apologies, when you said "this year" I thought you meant for 2007 credits. I always think of the return being filed this year as last years. Your reasoning re the possible underpayent is very valid. Getting a lump sum from Revenue is always better than owing them. At this time of the year the HC Credit is worth a week in canaries for 2

Hi Cashman,
It would be more tax effective for your wife to use her own PAYE allowance and forget the home careres allowance.

This would mean that her earnings would incur NIL tax while you would loose the home carers tax credit.(PAYE allowance in 2006 was €1620 ie. higher than the home carers allowance of €770)

Send in copies of both P60's and evidence of any other income to Rev.Comms. The PAYE tax credit should appear on her P60.

Hope she filled in her form 12a when starting that part time job
