Hi everyone:

Last week I read an article about Metal Fillings and Mercury Fillings.
The lady who wrote the piece for the Irish Independent mentioned that
she only visited a Holistic Dentist. I have searched via Google for Ireland
and can only locate the name and phone number for a Holistic Dentist
located in Kilkenny. Does anyone know of any located here in Dublin?

I think you'll find most dentists have been using (mercury-free) white composite for fillings for quite a few years now.

These are mostly used for front teeth, the silver ones are still used for other teeth as they last longer.

Certainly used to be the case and maybe still is to a lesser extent, but amalgam fillings are not immune to deterioration either.

A common problem is that they slightly shrink through time allowing bacteria to invade around the 'seal' and therefore contributing to decay in behind the actual filling.

According to my dentist white fillings last in and around 7 yrs whereas the silver ones can last up to 15 yrs, again these are not exact times.

composite is the main material option for white fillings on back teeth.
Glass ionomer is a different material.

Is 'glass ionomer' not the generic name for a variety of mercury-free tooth coloured dental cements?

With which 'composite', as a term, is virtually synonymous - no?
 
no glass ionomer is a different material than composite and are not synonymous. glass ionomer is a fluoride leaching cement that is tooth coloured but is only used under fillings or in non-stress bearing areas. It's only similarity with composite is that it is tooth coloured but is much different chemically.
