Holidays ... suggest something different

We're looking for an interesting holiday destination that won't blow the bank. We'll be travelling with two children (6+2) ... we've done the following in the last few years

*Nice and Monte Carlo
*Costa del Sol
*Menorca
*Gold Coast and Sydney
*Drenthe, Netherlands

Any suggestions would be welcome? Thanks.

PS Can't afford to stay in Ireland!

Agree with sentimatents about Ireland - it was funny to hear the Tourist Industry chief on the radio this morning (Business Prog) stating that they were offering 6 nights accomodation plus car hire in Ireland for €250. When a listener called in to ask if this was open to Irish people the very long winded answer was "no!" Rip off Irl. alive and well?

Anyway - what about Lake Garda / Como?
Paris has loads to see culture AND Eurodisney

Just curious - How did the loooong haul flights to Sydney go with the two little 'uns?

brian - lots of tourist agencies offer special deals only to people who are not resident in the specific country. You can get a rail pass valid for weeks in Japan for about the cost (to a Japanese person) of a return ticket from Tokyo to Nagasaki. This could as easily be described as "Good value Ireland" or "Good value Japan"

Henny - most southern European countries offer discounted/free accommodation/travel for children. I think Ireland falls into its own category of Far West Europe with little or no allowance for childrens rates.

If budget is the main criteria I would suggest researching and booking direct. If you booked the Menorca holiday through a travel agency here you should have a look at the hotels website and see how much they charge per room and then see how much the travel agency charged. You might also find that the hotel offers free accommodation for children under X years of age while the agency here gave you a 'generous' 20-30% discount off the full rate.

In terms of suggestions, I have nothing in particular in mind. Except perhaps going skiing (direct) which can be good value. We went to Mayrhofen last year and got a huge 3 bedroom apartment for €100 a day when pokey little hotel rooms cost as much. We went for a larger room than needed, so it may well have cost something like €85 per day. Bear in mind this was for a brand new, excellent quality apartment. Childrens train tickets were free (this is southern-ish Europe), their lift passes were free and their ski hire was free (in the right shops) with adult ski hire.

Bearing in mind the free overland travel for kids element you could easily have a good old adventure around much of Europe at a low cost even if you don't like skiing.

Flying to OZ

Flying to Oz with small children is no bother. We flew Dublin - London - KL -Sydney -Ballina. We had nightime flights for London to KL and again because of the time change for KL to Sydney.
Phenergan is a good standby option ... also it's worth paying for a seat even if your child is under 2 ... our flight home was packed.

Thanks for all the other suggestions ... cost isn't the big deciding factor ... somewhere not too hot as we will be travelling in late July ... though about going to Croatia ... my language skill aren't great though.
