I'm looking for a holiday that is aimed at gaining a basic grasp of the language. I've googled it but have been unable to find any that operate out of Ireland. Has anyone any recommendations?

I expect you won't find too many language school package deals running out of Ireland, so my advice would be to arrange flights and accomodation separately. Aer Lingus and Ryanair fly to a bewildering number of towns in Spain so you should be able to get a good deal somewhere.

Another recommendation is to avoid very touristy places on the costas as you will spend most of your time talking in English to ex-pats. Find either a city or a slightly out-of-the-way town, where you'll need to use the language in shops and restaurants. Nothing like necessity to get those language muscles going!

I got a recommendation for this place: http://www.hispania-valencia.com/ but there are loads of others available on the Net (e.g. see http://www.alhambra-instituto.org/).

As an aside, BBC2 are currently showing a series called Excuse My French, where a trio of minor celebs are immersed somewhere in France for a month to learn as much French as possible.
As it is television, things are made slightly easier than for mere mortals. Each of the three had his or her own personal tutor.
I saw the first programme this week and thought it was very entertaining.

You must look for "cursos de verano". Available all over Spain. For example in Santander....... [broken link removed]
