Hit and Run and no action from the garda.

I was knocked off my motorbike by a car in a hit and run last week. I got the make and the reg of the car. Luckily I had no serious damage done to me but my bike is fairly banged up.

Anyway, I gave all the details to the garda who came after I called 999. Since then I have heard nothing and it is now over a week since the incident. I've called the station each day to speak to the garda, after two days she still had not looked into the reg. Not only am I unable to get my bike fixed until the car is traced but the thoughts of the driver getting away with it because the garda has let this go is driving me crazy.

Do I need to get a solicator involved?

Does anyone have experience/advice that might help me?
 
Did you get the number of the Garda? Surely this is deriliction of duty. You may want to complain. Ask a solicitor asap.
 
Absolutely, consult a solicitor and commit your record of events to paper without further delay.
 
Have you asked to see her superior or the local inspector?

Fully agree with Carpenter - make a note of everything you can recall a.s.a.p. the gardai - her number, the date / time of incident, description or driver / car and reg no. any witnesses etc. etc.

I might also suggest you get in touch with the Motor Insurance Bureau of Ireland. They are a statutory body (i.e., established by law) and their role is to compensating genuine victims of uninsured and untraced driving in Ireland.

Their website is fairly comprehensive so I won't go into the details here, but first step, check out their website here (http://www.mibi.ie), then get in touch with their Information Line: (01) 634 5689. To my knowledge, their services are free.

AFAIA the Motor Insurance Bureau only cover injuries for uninsured and untraced driving (hit & run), they do not cover damage to vehicles.
 
Yes, and in any case the MIBI will not do anything until the guards investigation is complete.

Thanks for all the replies. As I understand it, the Motor Insurance Bureau will cover damage, with an excess of 440 but the car must be traced and shown to be uninsured - a fact that doesn't seem to bother the garda.

I spoke to the Superintendent, who was pretty irrate at me calling him but in the end he said he would pass a note onto the Sargent. That was five days ago and still nothing. I'm going to call into the station again tomorrow and try to speak directly to the Sargent.

Seems they'll bust you quicker for having a broken headlight than a hit and run. Sorry but I now know the meaning of frustration!
 
Rather than/in addition to calling into the station, I'd suggest you put it in writing. I'm not for generating extra paperwork for the Gardaí unnecessarily, but at least you'll have a formal record of your own — and you may find you get better 'service', too.
 
for a fee of €6.50 or something like that, you can write to the local authority and ask for the identity of the registered owner. they may and I repeat may, have the identity of the current insurer on file. You should then send a registered letter to the registered owner and insurer and that shoudl propmt a response.

you can also contact the MIBI. they will contact the insurer of the vehicle and advise. The insurer must then confirm that they were the insurer.
 
AFAIK the motor tax dept of the local authority (eg Cork for C registrations) will only entertain such paper requests for registered owner details from solicitors.
