Historical Bank Records

Does anyone know if bank records older than 10 years are stored or archived anywhere?

I am looking for bank statements or records of a large transaction which occurred during the period 1976-1980.

It was a payment to an American bank account if thats any clue.

banks are only required to hold records for 7 years. You will find it difficult to assess bank records beyond this period. Some Banks may oblige, but I can't see 25/30 year trawl as being successful. If available a search would be extremely expensive.

I have heard it said that some records are kept on microfiche in the central bank. Can anyone verify this? I have contacted them but have yet to receive any reply.

I have already checked with the local bank branch but they do not have any records for that period anymore.
