Hiring a digger

I was thinking of hiring a digger( mini jcb) to dig my back garden up, as it is totally soggy, then putting gravel and sand in for drainage. Would this be a good thing to do, how easy are these to operate, does anyone know how expensive they are to hire??? Any suggestions welcome.

hi Maura hiring a digger can be fun but expensive.i'd say from about 150 a day and it will take a bit of getting use to.how biga the garden?

Maura can you expand on what you are going to do with the sand and gravel - my garden although new is a disaster and holds all the water at the surface due to extremely poor drainage - right now I couldnt even walk across it without sinking - anyone's ideas greatly appreciated!!

Having done this ourselves I would suggest you hire a digger man aswell ... it's not as easy as it looks. If you have a big garden and you hire a mini-digger it will take ages ... at huge cost. On the other hand, if you get a pro he will have it done in a day (or less). Well worth the money.

Our garden is about 20m X 10m so it is about the size of a small swimming pool.

I was just going to dig the garden up then put in gravel and sand to help drainage, not sure if that is the best thing to do. I'll check the other posts mentioned and see if they help me.
