Hiring a car in Italy - need a IDP?

Hi

Am travelling to Italy next week and was thinking of hiring a car for a day or 2. Have a full Irish drivers licence. Do I need an Internationals Driver Permit to hire a car there or is my Irish passport ok?

I may not have enough time to get it, so hoping I don't!

Your Irish Driving licence will be sufficient although beware that car rental company may have minimum age / years of driving requirements. Check online on the Hertz, rentacar or Avis websites!

Since the standrd format EU driving licence was introduced in Ireland, this is sufficient to hire a car in EU countries. I have hired in Italy with an Irish driving license.
