More than 700,000 taxpayers will have their returns audited every year to ensure their contributions match their lifestyle.

A warning to all those BMW drivers who are on minimum wage ;)

Sounds like pretty sophisticated software. But will it actually work properly and will they be able to use it?

"More than 700,000 taxpayers will have their returns audited every year to ensure their contributions match their lifestyle.
The crackdown will target the 580,000 individuals who file self-assessment tax returns, as well as 140,000 companies that file returns."

An annual audit of 700,000 taxpayers: that seems to imply that each and every company and self-assessment individual will be audited yearly , which cannot be correct (numbers add up to 720,000 returns, between individuals and businesses, just 20,000 more than projected annual audit figures. Also is approx 17% of total population of ROI).
I must be mis-interpreting the numbers, because that doesn't make sense to me, unless individual company directors are being audited, instead of the company, which would increase the number of people available for audit. These numbers exclude PAYE individuals.

Can anyone else make more sense out of this for me?

I think what they mean is all 700,000 or so returns will be passed through R.E.A.P. ( per the indo article) as part of general tax audit procedures and any which throw up "interesting results" may then be subject to desk audit or field audit.

This might be following the review of ROS which is happening this weekend where the existing self-assesmsent system is being merged with Integrated Taxation System to give more integration ot the various sets of information Revenue have. This is t help them make better use of information they already have but often don't realise... As the Chair of the RC said... if "Revenue only knew what Revenue knows".

Yikes!!!!!!!!
It's like when I'm stopped by a garda for some random road check , and immediately feel guilty and go bright red (having done nothing wrong!), same feeling when it comes to the thought of being audited!

Nicola
PS thanks for clarification, makes more sense now

........yep - probably brought to you by the guys who did the electronic voting machines!

Overall, using ROS as the benchmark, yea it works fairly well but there are glitches in that occasionally so I'd expect some in this system too. But then of course since all self-assessed taxpayers are 100% squeaky clean I don't imagine there's anything to worry about.

if "Revenue only knew what Revenue knows".

Exactly. The Vehicle Registration system spits out a list of prestige cars. Some data clerk puts that on the case notes, but unless you have some system (computer not human) method of pulling that case because income as % of car value, then fear not ye tax dodgers.
