Hertz car rentals

I booked my US car rental online with hertz last month and prepaid the rental. They say they need to send you a voucher in order to use the rental.

How long do they usually wait before they send you the voucher? Is pre-payment for car hire a common thing?

I've booked directly with Avis in Europe & one of the US-only hire companies, both through ebookers.ie - Ebookers send you the 'voucher' as an email, so you just bring a printout of the email. Ebookers take prepayment for the basic fee, though you pay for extra drivers at the counter when you pick up the rental.
