Nothing! It's wonderful!

But it's more about how to keep your PC clean — a wide-ranging review/explication of relevant programs, and an overview of other 'engine maintenance' tasks like defragging, regcleaning, etc. — whereas the other one reads more like a fixit for someone with an already infected PC. I never knew that tip about disabling the system restore feature at the beginning, for example...

I'll delete it if you like.

..but what were you doing getting a trojan in the first place. did you not see the "How to keep your pc clean" post....

It would seem that AVGfree is been discontinued as from January next year unfortunately. It also appears that you cannot now download AVG free either.

AVG doesn't removed most of the virus, it only indentifies them, tehn u have to search on internet for remedies.

As far as I know they are discontinuing the current free product, but a new one is already available, all this means is that you will no longer receive updates for the current product from Jan.

I thought the same as you when I read the pop-up notice on my laptop, I think they may have worded it to give this impression and to encourage people to sign-up for the paid-for version.

This is indeed the case. I initially thought 'oh, sh*t', when my own version 7.1 popped up the rather ambiguously worded warning, but I've since downloaded the new version 7.5 ...

How do I know that it is safe to remove programs running at start up, I'm afraid I'll delete one that is actually needed at startup???

What happens then if you download something and you need a media program to view it - does it then open up the program for you?

Some viruses/malware can hide their presence when Windows boots. Because of this sometimes it makes sense to scan having NOT booted from the main hard drive. In this case something like the Ultimate Boot CD can be useful. Otherwise you might need to take the hard drive out and install it in or attach it to (e.g. via USB) another PC where the scan will take place.

Hi,

I have some type of malicious adware on my pc, It manifests itself by popping up an ad page after say I open yahoo or other page, when on that page there are advertisements for software to remove adware, it takes over existing advertising space.

I downloaded the Adaware program that CAR recommended and it found some dodgy looking stuff and I deleted them, I also ran a full system symantec scan and it turned up nothing, I also ran spyware and it turned up nothing.

After running the Adaware program and deleting the suspicious files it thought that was the end of it but no, it's still hanging around.

Any help would be appreciated to rid myself of this annoying intrusion.

PS - didn't want to start a new thread on this as there are loads but none specific but pls move if mods feel it warrants a thread of its own thanks

Often no one tool will detect/clean all problems. You may need to try a few different tools mentioned in this thread and in links that were posted.

If it is ad/spy ware and it has created a reg key, how can I find out where/what that key is so I can delete it from the register ? Is this possible

You are better off running a number of the tools mentioned in this thread rather than manually looking for/deleting registry keys!

Ok, I have spent the afternoon downloading/running ad-aware, rogue remover, Spybot AND Avg anti-spyware, I also used Tweaknow and cleandisk(which is part of windows), I was thinking that should sort it but noooooooooooo:mad:, it is manifesting itself by, say I open yahoo as my home page, there is an advertisement on for a car and all of a sudden it changes to an ad warning me that I have spyware and to "click here", it sems to be taking over different pictures on various websites, ie attaching itself to pictures and changing them.

It is also throwing up pop-ups for advertisments even though I have my pop up blocker switched on.

Pleeeeeeease help, it's driving me scatty !

If you are using IE then switch to Firefox perhaps? Won't solve the problem but should avoid it until you can get to the bottom of it and sort it out.

I swear by 4 utilities. Firefox, Crap Cleaner, AVG and Windows defender.

Virus/Trojan/Malware free for more years then I care to remember.

If none of the above help your situation then Id suggest running hijackthis and posting the log on one of the forums. It reports any settings that are on your pc that could have been compromised by the baddies.
