help, new laptop not working

I bought a new laptop at christmas and last night I could not log into it. Its a dell inspiron and I keep getting "windows is low on virtual memory". It hangs on log in. I can start it in safe mode ok but increasing the virtual mem size to the max makes no difference. I tried a system restore too and it made no difference.

Could this be a virus? I do have a firewall and I have a symantec product installed so I would be very surprised if it is. Any tips on what I can do here? Do I need virtual memory at all (can I turn it off?)

It just looks like windows xp no longer works.

thanks got it going. Turns out the firewall I was using was hogging all the ram on startup so do not use outpost!
