Hi,
an Irish-American friend of mine rented a car last year in Shannon. Usually he rents from Avis but avis did not have the car he booked and sent him to another agency.
The car was not up to the usual standard - for one it had 58K miles on the clock. On the initial journey it became clear that the car had a faulty clutch - the clutch burnt out on the 45 mile journey - and a replacement car was a provided. The rental company have charged my friends credit card for the cost of transporting the replacement car and repairing the damage - about € 1000. They charged it to the credit card as collision damage expecting that the credit card's insurance would cover it. However my friend queried it and the rental company admitted it was for the clutch and for organising a replacement car. The credit card insurance paid the charge but the insurance does not cover it.
The rental company are arguing that my friend burnt out the clutch. My friend comes to Ireland every year and never had a problem with a clutch before.
My friend has contacted the The Car Rental organisation, his credit card company and various other agencies and is getting nowhere.
Has anyone any advice on who could help him - at this stage he is resigned to going legal and this is a last effort to resolve it before that.
