help! credit card tax on a closed a/c

this is my third time to post this so i hope it works!!!!!

I received a statement from Ulster bank for a credit card a/c that was "closed" in 2002. It has government tax of €40 on it. I rang the bank to sort it out and i was told that i am liable for the €40. First they tried to tell me that the tax was from 2002!!!!!! when that didn't work they told me that even though the card was cancelled the account was kept active so the €40 was added. I asked to speak to a manager and surprisingly he wasn't available. Is there anything I can do about this or will i have to pay it.

You should first understand (including charging it on closure if it has not already been paid in the current tax year) before jumping to any conclusions about the financial institution ripping you off.

When you closed the UB credit card account did you do so in writing? When I closed my NIB credit account I enclosed a letter with the last payment stating that I was closing the account with this 'full and final payment'. I never heard from them again.

Clubman - i have read the link you gave me and I understand that an account closed after 1st April 2003 is charged €40 but my card was cancelled in August 2002. What happened was I opened an MBNA account and transferred money from there to the UB card to clear it. There was a mix up with MBNA and the money was never sent. By the time this was sorted and the money was sent I had received notice for UB the my card was cancelled. When the balance was paid I rang to confirm that the a/c was closed and I was told it was. (I know now i should have sent it in writing) but I honestly didn't think that the a/c was still active as i hadn't heard anything from them in over 2 years.
