Hi,

My parents are in generally very good health for their age (Father 73, Mother 67) with no pre exsiting conditions and both nonsmokers, they are currently covered with Irish Life Level 2 Health Excess 150 and are up for renewal in April

Is there similar schemes at a cheaper price than the Irish life policies that they could potentially switch too, considering their potential health needs down the road

Thanks,
Colly

Hi Colly1977,

As Irish Life plans have a 2000 co-payment for hip or knee replacement surgery in private hospitals, they are not best options for older people.
Laya healthcare fully cover this surgery in private and hi-tech hospitals. The following plans are worth considering;

1. Laya Simply Connect; price 1230pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, private/hi-tech excess capped at 150 x 2 max per year
for all admissions, day case excess 50 per procedure. No excess to pay in any public hospital. Good day to day cover included, 50% refund
for gp, consultants, dental, physio etc upto a max refund of 500 per person per year. ie 50% of 1000 = 500.

2. Laya Simplicity Plan; price 1370pa; all public, private(including private room fully covered) and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, private excess
capped at 100 x 2 max per year for all admissions, day case excess 50 per procedure. No excess to pay in any public hospital. Good day to day
cover included, 50% refund for gp, consultants, dental, physio etc except the first 100 non-refundable. Max refund per year is 7650 per person.

Note; there is no waiting time for the extra day to day cover with Laya, regardless of your age, refunds are allowable from renewal date.

The following 2 plans with Irish Life and VHI would have similar enough cover to Simply Connect but for hip and knee replacement surgery you
would only be fully covered in Blackrock Clinic. All other private hospitals would have a shortfall of 2 or 3 thousand per surgery.
Details as follows;
1. VHI PMI 07 10; price 1240pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, private excess capped at 150 x 1 max per year for all
admissions to private or hi-tech hospitals, day case excess 50 per procedure. Hip and knee replacement surgery in private hospitals, fully covered
in Blackrock Clinic, 20% shortfall (2,000 or 3000) payable in any other private hospitals. Good day to day cover included, 50% cover for gp visits,
consultants, dental, physio etc upto a max refund of 1000 per year per person. ie 50% of 2000 = 1000.

2. Irish Life 4D Health 2 plan; price 1312pa; all public, private and 3 hi-tech hospitals covered, private excess 150 per admisssion and day case
excess 75 per procedure. Hip and knee replacement surgery in private hospitals, fully covered in Blackrock Clinic, 2000 co-payment is payable
in any other private hospitals. Good day to day cover included, 50% refund for gp, consultants, etc upto a max refund of 4000 per year per person.

Just to note, for the extra day to day cover on the VHI and Irish Life plan, there is a six month wait before refunds are allowable.
You don't lose day to day cover while waiting, they would stay on Irish Life Level 2 Health Excess 150 plan for day to day cover only while waiting.
This is because they are both over 50 years. Laya have no waiting times for day to day cover, regardless of age.

As their renewal date is April, there's no guarantee of prices staying as above. Any price changes will be shown on the HIA website under
'latest news' section in the first week in March.

Regards, Snowyb
